History, Myths and legends of the Amalfi Coast

The origins of the Amalfi Coast are shrouded in an aura of mystery where the legend tells that Amalfi takes its name from a nymph, that Hercules had fallen madly in love with but she died prematurely breaking his heart.

Hercules decided to find a special place where to bury his beloved and spotted this site along a green coast where the sea, the sky and nature all met.

Along this coast Hercules also found a small village and decided to decorate it with “the tree of the soft fruits, fragrant and bright as the sun” that he stole in the Garden of the Hesperides, during one of his Twelve Labours. Those fruits are now well known, all over the world, as the “Amalfi Lemons“.

For the people of Amalfi going go to heaven will be a day like any other

To live and discover the Amalfi Coast is to immerse yourself in history and nature simultaneously. There are beautiful hiking trails to explore, through glorious gardens and ancient paper mills that produce a high-quality Paper introduced to Europe during the 12th Century. The location of Amalfi at this time was a key factor for its dominance on the sea and in trade routes at the time.
